When a hospitality group launches a loyalty programme in the UAE, the first conversation is usually about marketing. Social posts, influencer nights, a launch offer. They all help. In our experience, though, one of the biggest sources of members is the team already working the floor.
I founded TheLoyaltyCo, and we build loyalty programmes and guest apps for restaurant, bar and beach club groups across the UAE. Here is what we have learned about staff-led sign-ups, and why they matter for recognition as much as for growth.
What the numbers show
Mindset is the membership programme we run for AlphaMind Group's venues in the UAE. Since staff referrals were switched on in May 2026, about 3,441 members have joined through a staff member. They came from 159 active staff promoters across 17 venues, which is about 37% of all sign-ups in that time. At the strongest venue, each active staff member averaged 52 referrals.
That is a lot of members for very little marketing spend. The guest is already in the venue, already enjoying themselves, and being asked by someone they have just met and like.
Why it works so well here
UAE hospitality is personal. Guests at a beach club or a lounge often know the host or their usual server by name, and many come back to the same venue week after week. A sign-up that comes from that relationship starts the membership on the right foot.
It also tells you something that a download from an advert never will. When a server signs up a guest, you know which venue they were in, who looked after them and often what the occasion was. That is the start of a real guest profile, not just an email address.
Setting it up properly
Give every team member their own link or code. A QR code on a personal card, or a code entered on the POS, so every sign-up can be traced back to the person who asked. Without this you cannot reward anyone fairly.
Make it a ten second job. If joining takes a long form, staff stop asking. Collect the minimum on the night, such as name, mobile number and consent, and ask for the rest later in the app.
Reward the team, and show the results. A small payment per verified sign-up, or a monthly prize for the top venue, works well. Share a simple leaderboard so teams can see how they are doing.
Count active members, not just sign-ups. Reward staff more when the guest they signed up actually comes back. It stops people signing up friends to hit a target, and it keeps the focus on guests who will return.
Handle consent correctly. The UAE Personal Data Protection Law, Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021, came into force on 2 January 2022 and prohibits processing personal data without the owner's consent, apart from specific exceptions (UAE Government portal). Where you rely on consent, the law says it must be clear, simple and easy to access, you must be able to prove it, and the guest must be able to withdraw it easily (UAE Legislation). So staff should never type in a guest's details without the guest agreeing, and your sign-up screen should make marketing consent a clear choice. Note that some free zones, such as DIFC and ADGM, have their own data protection rules, so check which ones apply to each venue.
From sign-up to recognition at the door
The same staff who sign guests up are the ones who can make membership feel worth having. When a member walks in, the host should know. That might be a name on the booking with a member flag, a tier shown on the POS, or a note that it is the guest's birthday month.
Recognition is the part of loyalty that big hotel programmes and delivery apps find hardest to copy. It costs very little and guests notice it straight away. A programme where the team signs guests up and then recognises them on the next visit builds the habit far faster than points alone.
Where to start
Pick one venue. Give each team member a personal code, agree a simple reward, and track sign-ups and second visits for a month. Then compare it with what your other channels delivered over the same period. If it works, roll it out venue by venue.
